What is the first symptom you noticed in Mush that made you think of celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance?

List all the symptoms you noticed as you read Mush that made you think of celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance.

Have you ever experienced similar symptoms as the narrator experiences throughout the book?
- If so, what were they?
- If not, what symptoms did you experience, and can you draw any similarities between your experiences at that of the narrator in Mush?

What were you thinking when the narrator decided not to see a specialist about her gastrointestinal problems prior to moving across the country with Nick?

What was your reaction to the narrator’s experiences with and attitude toward her doctors throughout the book?

Describe your thoughts and feelings while reading the scene about the Sundance Sunday brunch. How can you relate?

After undergoing an endoscopy but before receiving the results, the narrator goes to an Italian restaurant with her parents and their friends. What was your reaction to that scene?

We can see that the narrator in Mush experienced symptoms of celiac disease throughout her entire life, though she was not aware that’s what they were at the time. Looking back at your own life, are there symptoms that now seem obvious as having to do with celiac disease or gluten intolerance? How long did it take you to seek medical care and/or arrive at a diagnosis?
