That little girl was quiet and fierce.
She tackled every challenge
without question or hesitation.
It was expected, she could do it,
and she would.
She made them all proud,
until she didn’t.
Because, by that time,
it was not ladylike
to stand out from the crowd;
to shine with a light that could not go unnoticed;
to sing with a voice that had to be heard.
Because it was not ladylike,
to want.
